Conklin Named New President at JBC
Jamestown, N.Y. — The Board of Trustees of Jamestown Business College have named David Conklin, the college’s current Vice President and Academic Dean, the new president of the college after having accepted the resignation of long-time president, Tyler C. Swanson. Mr. Conklin will assume the leadership of JBC effective October 1, 2008. Mr. Conklin is believed to be only the seventh president of the college, which was founded in 1886. Douglas Schutte, Chairman of the Board of Trustees said in making the announcement, “The Board has had numerous opportunities over the last few years to witness the administrative abilities of Dave Conklin. It is obvious that he has the respect of the college’s outstanding faculty and staff. His leadership as Academic Dean in the achievement of Bachelor Degree granting authority and in the college’s recent ten-year grant of accreditation is evidence of those abilities.” Conklin has been at JBC for more than 25 years, beginning his career in 1983 as an instructor. In 2000 he was named Academic Dean and began serving as Vice President in 2007. Professionally active, he has visited other colleges as a member of accreditation evaluation teams for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. He has also been trained as an evaluator for the New York State Education Department. He represents JBC in a number of state and national professional organizations. |
He received his Bachelor degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and holds a Master’s degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia. An active member of the Jamestown community, he has served on the Board of Directors for Reachout Ministeries, Family Services of Jamestown, and is currently the Vice-President of the James Prendergast Library Association. He and his wife Jill live in Jamestown and have four children. Conklin noted that the presidency of an institution with a 122 year history is a huge responsibility, but said he is ready to assume his new role at the college. “I have been working closely with Mr. Swanson for some time,” Conklin said. “While his leadership will be greatly missed, we have a reliable and knowledgeable faculty and staff and will continue to provide our students with a top-notch educational experience.” Swanson, who first joined the college as a faculty member in 1968, became Dean of the college in 1973 and its president in 1982. He received both his BA and MBA degrees from the State University of New York at Buffalo. During his tenure as President of the college, he has served in a leadership capacity for several national and state college organizations, including the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools, and the Career College Association. He has been a trustee of the New York State Association of Proprietary Colleges for over 25 years and an active member of Business Education Research of America.
